4th Annual “Hoppy Possum: Southern Brewers Cup” Beer Festival Moving to Bristol Tennessee

BRISTOL, TENNESSEE – The annual Hoppy Possum: Southern Brewers Cup is back – and will be held this year at Anderson Park in Bristol, Tenn., on Sept. 23.

The Hoppy Possum offers a beer festival experience unlike any other. The event showcases the skill and creativity of the best amateur brewers from across the US. Festival attendees will experience a hybrid festival format that includes the best aspects of a craft beer festival (fancy tasting glasses, unlimited tastings, live music, and local food trucks) and combine it with a home brew competition.

Seventy-five homebrewers from across the nation will descend upon Northeast Tennessee to compete for $10,000 in cash prizes. It costs nothing for brewers to compete except for their time and their beer. Festival attendees will pay an entry fee and enjoy unlimited tastings and festival activities all afternoon. Festival goers are encouraged to rate (by scanning a QR code) the offerings they try. The top 5 beer entries and the top 3 non-beer (cider, mead, etc.) entries will move on to a final judging panel.

“Hoppy Possum is a place to discover unique and exciting libations you will not find anywhere else,” said festival director Gavin Andrews, “Beside the traditional styles, expect everything from over-the-top dessert stouts to hop seltzer and fruit slushy meads, there is something for everyone” The “people’s choice” format ensures brewers will offer not only exciting and experimental beverages, but wacky themed booths and costumes. “It is a party unlike anything else.”

Explore Bristol Executive Director Matt Bolas is excited to have the beer festival come to Bristol.

“We are very happy to welcome Hoppy Possum to Bristol,” he said. “Having 75 brewers here from a dozen states gives us a great opportunity to showcase our city to these folks and to the many attendees who will be here for the festival.”

Maggie Bishop, the Executive Director for Believe in Bristol, echoes those sentiments.

“We’re thrilled to be a partner in bringing Hppy Possum to Bristol,” she said. “This has been a popular event in the past, and we feel like Downtown Bristol, which is known for hosting big, fun events like this, is the perfect place for it.”

Hoppy Possum: Southern Brewers Cup will take place September 23, 2023, at Anderson Park in Bristol, TN. VIP entry begins at 1 p.m. General admission opens at 2 p.m. Musical acts include Asheville-based funk band “Supatight”, surf rock band “The Future 26’s” “DJ RCA”, and “Shuffler Sound System”. A variety of food and merchandise vendors will be on-site as well. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online.
